The pump is usually the single biggest electricity user in a home after heating and cooling. Switching from an old single-speed pump to a variable-speed pump (VSP) is the highest-return energy upgrade most pool owners can make — often paying for itself within a couple of seasons.

Why the savings are so large

A single-speed pump runs flat-out whenever it's on, moving far more water than filtration actually needs. A VSP lets you run slow for long hours — and slow is dramatically cheaper because of the physics below. ENERGY STAR–certified pool pumps are, on average, far more efficient than standard models, which is why many utilities offer rebates on them.

The affinity laws — the reason it works

Pump behaviour follows the affinity laws from fluid mechanics: flow is proportional to speed, but power rises with the cube of speed. Halve the motor speed and you move half the water — but you draw only one-eighth of the power. Running twice as long at half speed filters the same total gallons while using roughly a quarter of the energy.

Worked example

A pump drawing 2,000 W at full speed drops to about 2,000 × 0.5³ = 250 W at half speed. Run it twice as many hours and you still filter the same water for a fraction of the cost.

Sizing the pump to your pool

Bigger isn't better. The pump only needs to deliver enough flow to turn the water over once or twice a day against your plumbing's resistance (total dynamic head). An oversized pump forces water through the filter too fast to clean it well and wastes energy. Match the flow to the turnover your volume needs, and check it against your pipe size and filter rating with the sizing tool.

Setting a smart schedule

A typical VSP program runs a low speed most of the day for quiet, efficient filtration, with a short higher-speed burst for skimming, vacuuming, or running a heater or cleaner that needs more flow.
