The choice between in-ground and above-ground is really a choice about budget, permanence, and how much disruption you're willing to take on. Both give you a swimmable backyard; they differ by an order of magnitude in cost, install time, and lifespan.
Above-ground pools are by far the cheaper entry: the pool kit itself is modest, and many are DIY or low-labor installs. Add a pump, filter, and decking and it's still a fraction of an in-ground project. In-ground pools involve excavation, a structural shell (vinyl-liner, fiberglass, or gunite/concrete), plumbing, and often permits and landscaping — a major construction cost that varies widely by region, size, and finish. Whichever you build, three costs are easy to forget: filling it (thousands of gallons at your water rate, or trucked-in water), dirt removal for in-ground digs, and the ongoing energy and chemical bill. Above-ground pools come in standard round (commonly 12–33 ft diameter) and oval kit sizes, with a fixed wall height — so their volume is predictable from the kit dimensions. In-ground pools are built to any footprint: rectangle, kidney, freeform, Roman, Grecian, or L-shaped, often with a deep end. That design freedom is the main reason people go in-ground — and the reason volume takes a proper shape calculation rather than a kit lookup.
An above-ground pool typically lasts several to ~15 years (the liner sooner), can be taken down, and adds little to home value. A well-built in-ground pool lasts decades, becomes part of the property, and can affect resale — up or down depending on the buyer and market. In-ground pools cost more to heat and maintain simply because they're usually larger and deeper. Safety requirements (barriers, fencing, compliant drain covers under the VGB Act) apply to both and should be budgeted from the start.
Choose above-ground if budget, speed, or the option to remove it later matter most, or you're testing whether your family will use a pool. Choose in-ground if you want a permanent, custom, deep-end pool and plan to stay in the home. Either way, size the volume, fill cost, and (for in-ground) excavation before you commit — surprises there are the ones that hurt.
